A man sustained injuries during a shooting that occurred on Wednesday morning at a gas station in broad daylight, marking the second shooting in the city within a 24-hour period.

Officers from the Tallahassee Police Department discovered the injured man with serious wounds shortly after 11 a.m. at the Sunoco Gas Station on Blair Stone Road.

Shortly thereafter, the police apprehended Mon’tavious Bruce, 24, charging him with attempted first-degree murder. Bruce is currently in custody at the Leon County Detention Facility.

“Investigative efforts reveal Bruce and the victim were known to each other and had previous verbal disputes,” TPD stated in a news release. “Bruce fired at the victim as he was exiting the convenience store. A short time after the shooting, Bruce was located and taken into custody without further incident.”

The occurrence of the second shooting in two days shattered the weeks-long period of relative calm in Tallahassee, which had been grappling with an increase in violent crime.

This incident represents at least the 83rd significant shooting in the capital city and county in the current year. Up to now in 2023, 21 individuals have lost their lives, and 71 others have sustained injuries, as reported by an analysis of gun violence conducted by the Tallahassee Democrat.
