POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Polk County Sheriff Judd told the press about a crash on SR 60 in Mulberry that killed two people.
The sheriff’s office says that the crash happened around 5:41 a.m. and that it involved two cars.
“We had a senior from Bartow High School who was driving her red pickup truck east toward Bartow High School,” said Judd.
“From what we know so far in the early stages of the investigation, it looks like she was following the law.”
Judd said that a silver Expedition that was going west turned around and went south, and the kid from Bartow hit the Expedition.
“On the trip, there were seven people. Four of them had to get out. The fact that they weren’t wearing seat belts was clear.
Two of them fell onto the street. Two of them hit the line of trees. “They were hurt pretty badly,” said Judd.
Judd said that the 18-year-old student at Bartow High School was badly hurt and taken to Tampa General.
Judd says that five people were taken to Lakeland Regional by ground ambulance, where they are getting care, and one person died at the spot.
“The second person to die in Lakeland Regional has now passed away. So, two people have died, and the rest are in very different states, from stable to critical.
There is a chance that one third of them will die from their injuries. Right now, that one needs surgery right away. So, this was a bad day,” Judd said.
